1. Mount Everest has two other official names.

As Mount Everest is on the border of Nepal and China, it has both Nepali and Tibetan names. They are Sagarmatha and Chomolungma. Sagarmatha means God of the Sky while Chomolungma means Mother of the Earth.

However, Mount Everest is named after the director of the British Surveyor General of India, George Everest. George spent most of his days surveying the Himalayas in the 19th century.

2. George Everest has never seen The Peak.

As we have already mentioned earlier, Mount Everest is named after this amazing person, George Everest. Though it is named after him, George never got a chance to climb the mountain.

3. Mount Everest is more than 60 million years old.

The marine fossils of Mount Everest were first discovered by explorer Noel Odell in 1924. It is proof that the mountain was originally covered by an ocean. Many geologists confirmed that the mountain was formed 60 million years ago.

Everest stands above the sea level of 8848.86 meters but Hawaii’s Mauna Kea stands only 4,205 meters above sea level. From the base, it has a height of 10,210 meters so measuring it above sea level doesn’t make it the highest one.

5. Mount Everest has been summited over 9,000 times.

Every trekker has a dream to be at the top of the world. Although not everyone has made it to the top, a total of 5,000 have successfully summited to top of the Mount Everest. Overall, it has been climbed 9,000 times meaning there are a bunch of people who have done it more than once.

6. Sherpas can only climb Mount Everest without oxygen.

Sherpas are a Nepalese ethnic group living in the Himalayas. If a person is living in mountainous areas with thin air, their body will automatically produce more hemoglobin than a person living at an average temperature. 8. Helicopters never fly to the top of Mount Everest.

Usually, helicopters can only fly up to the altitude of 5,000 meters. When the altitude gets higher then it means the air has a low density where the propellers can no longer achieve lift. As we all know, the height of Everest is more than 8,500 meters, so it is not possible thing of air evacuation at Everest.

According to some research, civil aviation aircraft can fly at altitudes of 8,000–10,000 meters but it is an impossible task to land on the top of Everest. However, climbers can take a helicopter ride up to the base camp only which is 5,200 meters.

9. The movie “Everest” was filmed on Mount Everest.

The movie, Everest is a 2015 biographical survival adventure film that was released in the year 1996. It tells the story of the mountain disaster.

Some parts of this movie were actually filmed on Everest while the others were filmed at the studios. It was filmed at an altitude of 4,750 meters in Nepal, near the Everest Base Camp. EBC.

10. It takes 39-40 days and at least 30,000 USD to summit Everest.

Climbers take at least 39-40 days to climb Everest excluding the trekking to Everest Base Camp. If you start to trek from the starting then it can other 10-14 days more. On the other hand, it is a bit costly to climb Everest but it is worth the pay. It takes around US $30,000 per person to climb the mountain. Not only this, each climber has to pay a license fee to the Nepal government of US $11,000.

Besides, climbers might pay some amount for oxygen, equipment, and other supplies. Sherpas charge them an extra amount for their oxygen tanks, equipment, and services.
